KEEP MUSIC LIVE!

"It was worth every penny to have live music" - Quote from a recent Stake Dance

Toby was “. . .born in a classic place where many people were hospitalised” and since then hasn’t stopped hitting things.

From a very tender age Toby experimented playing various instruments, turning down a promising career as a 2nd violinist and Cornet player and the opportunity of playing simple arrangements of “Wooden Heart” and “I’ve Got a Brand New Combine Harvester” in favour of all things that go bump in the night - or crash, ting, pop, snap, boom, crack, bong, bing, plip, (you get the idea!) at any other point in time.

Having finally found his sonic niche, Toby searched for like-minded individuals with whom to make plenty of noise and so spent time playing a wide range of musical styles including Rock, Folk, Samba, the lightest smattering of jazz as well as Concert Band and Orchestral.

Instead of trawling the mean streets of the small Norfolk villages of his adolescence, Toby concentrated his energy on redefining the music industry by providing the driving force behind the mighty Vinyl Grooveyard – a four, sometimes five piece outfit whose talent was predominantly surpassed by enthusiasm. “Those were the days. . .” Toby reminisces. “What I often refer to as the wonder years – that time when all I was ever going to be was a Rock icon. The unquenchable fire of beckoning super-stardom fuelled by the discovery that music could be the greatest of joys and not just something that had to be endured on Saturday mornings as a child, missing out on the cartoons that all my friends were watching, hating every moment – particularly that hour of music theory before being herded into a classroom high on the sugar from halfpenny Mojos and Flumps and bottles of Panda pops which seemed to add a whole new dimension to singing songs about mysterious little caped men in woodland copses.”

The years passed, Toby moved on to different projects, including a long stint as skinsman for News of the Victory – a heady combination of folk and rock that left crowds literally reeling on the dance floor, as well as depping for various bands as and when nobody else was available.

And so it is that as one of the newer members of The Connections we’re up to date with Toby’s musical odyssey . . .

Musical influences: Chad Smith, Neil Peart, Simon Phillips, Aaron Comess, Mike Bordin, Dave Abruzzese, John Bonham, Dave Brubeck, Will Calhoun, Billy Cobham.

On the band:
Colin I’m a long time friend and fan. A much accomplished musical allsort who I have been jamming with on and off for nigh on half a life time. Our mutual appreciation for subtle wit and good music has been a source of many fun times.

Andrew I remember Andrew from my youth as one of those guys who you’d probably never talk to but would admire from afar and was so pleased to be called up to play alongside him for the first time in ’93. Constantly striving for perfection, Andrew is on a mission to bring polished performances to the masses.

Stuart A lovely guy! More than able to quickly absorb new material. A fluid style of playing and a flexibility that lends itself nicely to moments of improvisation. Look at them fingers fly across the keyboard!

Claims to fame:

Once appeared on Highway playing Kettle drums – never met Harry Secombe though.

Had a gig gate-crashed by Leo Sayer one time and never got over how big his hair really was.

Shared a stage with folk comedian Jethro. . . should possibly keep that one quiet!

Used to live in the next village over from both Geoff Capes and Stephen Fry.
